To the northwest of the Camp de Tarragona is the Muntanyes de Prades mountain range, an area rising 1200 meters above the surrounding plains and valleys. Right in the middle of this mountain range, in the far north of the Baix Camp district, and in the middle of the future Muntanyes de Prades Natural Park is Capafonts.
The name of the village is very suggestive. In fact it comes from the Latin Caput Fontis, meaning “Head of the Spring”, the origin of the river Brugent. One of the characteristics of this area is the abundance of water, with nearly a hundred springs of all kinds.
Capafonts is in the centre of a valley totally surrounded and protected by a circle of mountains, through which the river that starts here runs. The location of the village itself is certainly original, on a hill rising 750 meters above the lands comprising the valley. The houses of the village are crowded together at the top of this hill, surrounded by plots in which hazel and almond trees jostle with vines and orchards. The first impression of the village as you arrive from the Capafonts Pass or from Alcover is both unforgettable and captivating: it has been compared with a nativity scene, a description it certainly deserves.
The town and the surrounding area are full of details and perspectives that will satisfy even the most sensitive and demanding of souls. The forms of the crags, the rocks of the crests that seem to hang over the streams, the thick woods with their many hues of green, dappled in autumn by the yellows and reds of the oaks, maples and other perennials, the deep blue sky, the many nooks and crannies where nature is in its wildest state, the murmur of the water leaping between the rocks of the river, the myriad stars at night...
and the intensity of the silence, which is ideal for rest and reflection. These are things only found in a place like this. This is why Capafonts is without a doubt a source of inspiration to poets and artists, who have plenty of good reasons to let their imagination run free.
